5 Ways To Prepare Your Home For Winter

5 Ways To Prepare Your Home For Winter

Winter in Reno will be here before we know it, which means it's time to think about preparing your home for the cold and snow. Here's a list of tips to know before the snow.

Pipe Insulation

Pipes in unheated interior spaces (basements, crawl spaces, garages, etc.) are the most likely to freeze with the colder temperatures. To help avoid pipes from bursting, apply pipe insulation on any exposed pipes and make sure to keep doors closed.

Test Run Your Heating System

If you haven't already turned on your heat (it gets cold in Reno!), now would be the time to check on it and replace the filter if necessary. You don't want to be freezing in your home because the heater doesn't work in the middle of winter.

Clean Out Your Gutters

Frozen leaves and debris left in your gutters can get underneath your shingles and cause damage to your roof. So making sure your gutters are cleared out before the winter weather comes is very important.

Check Your Roof

Speaking of roofs, make sure to have any roof maintenance completed before the cold weather comes. It's important to make sure no shingles are broken or missing that could cause further damage later. Also, make sure to look at the inside of your home in the attic and ceilings for any leaks or water stains. If you notice any of these items, you should call a roof inspector.

Seal Doors and Windows

Keep your heating bills down and the cold out by caulking window and door gaps. If you feel any air leaks in your windows on a day when it's windy, it may be time to get new windows.
